Probability (introduction)
Likelihood scale: impossible (0) to certain (1). Year 5 introduces; KS3 calculates.
KS2 probability is qualitative: words like impossible, unlikely, even chance, likely, certain. Some Year 6 work touches on the 0-1 scale. Quantitative probability (numerical) is KS3.
Worked examples
Rolling a 7 on a standard die: impossible. No 7 on the die.
Heads on a coin: even chance (50%).
The sun rising tomorrow: certain.
Frequently asked questions
Are dice fair in KS2 questions?
Always assumed fair unless the question states otherwise. KS2 doesn't deal with biased dice or weighted coins.
Why is the scale 0 to 1?
0 = impossible, 1 = certain. Decimals or fractions in between (0.5 = even chance). KS3 makes this numerical.
