Pie charts
Sectors as fractions or percentages of the whole. Year 6 reads simple pie charts.
Year 6 reads pie charts and links the sector size to a fraction or percentage of the data total. The whole circle is 360° or 100%.
Worked examples
Half a pie = 50% = ½ of the data.
A 90° sector = ¼ = 25%.
If 30% of 200 children prefer pizza, the pizza sector represents 60 children (and is 0.30×360 = 108°).
Frequently asked questions
Drawing pie charts in KS2?
Reading is the Year 6 expectation. Drawing comes in KS3 with calculation of sector angles.
Common SATs trap?
Sector fractions don't always equal sector counts — check whether the chart is to scale and read the labels carefully.
