Find 10%, 50%, 25%, 75% of a quantity using mental strategies. Year 5/6.
Year 6 children find common percentages of amounts mentally. The trick: 10% is divide by 10; 50% is halve; 25% is halve twice; 75% is half plus quarter.
Worked examples
10% of £80 = £8. Divide by 10.
50% of £80 = £40. Halve.
25% of £80 = £20. Halve twice (or ÷ 4).
Frequently asked questions
How about 15%?
10% + 5% = 10% + half-of-10% = 8 + 4 = £12 (for £80).
And 35%?
Three lots of 10% + half-of-10% = 24 + 4 = £28.
