UCAS Points Calculator

Pick up to five qualifications and grades. The total UCAS tariff points update live.

Enter values above to calculate.

The dropdowns cover A-Level, AS-Level, EPQ, BTEC (Extended Diploma / Diploma / Extended Certificate), IB Higher and Standard Level, and Scottish Advanced Highers and Highers. Up to five qualifications — enough for 3 A-Levels + AS + EPQ, or 6 IB subjects.

How it works.

How UCAS tariff points work:

Each qualification and grade carries a fixed number of points on the UCAS tariff. Add the points across all qualifications you've taken (or are predicted) to get your total.

A-Level points: A* = 56, A = 48, B = 40, C = 32, D = 24, E = 16.
AS-Level: A = 20, B = 16, C = 12, D = 10, E = 6 — roughly 40% of the equivalent A-Level.
EPQ: A* = 28, A = 24, B = 20, C = 16, D = 12, E = 8 — equivalent to half an AS.
BTEC Extended Diploma spans D*D*D* (168) down to PPP (48), equivalent to three A-Levels.
IB: HL grades score 56-12 (top down), SL grades 28-6.
Scottish Advanced Highers match A-Level points; Higher grades score 33 down to 15.

Worked examples
A*AA at A-Level = 152 points. 56 + 48 + 48.
AAB at A-Level = 136 points. 48 + 48 + 40.
BBC at A-Level = 112 points. 40 + 40 + 32.
3 Cs + EPQ A = 120 points. 32 × 3 + 24.
BTEC Extended Diploma DDM = 128 points.
IB 36 (6,6,5 HL + 6,5,5 SL) = 168 points. 48+48+32 + 24+16+16. Roughly equivalent to AAB at A-Level.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my UCAS points?
Add the tariff points for each qualification and grade. The calculator above does this live: pick a qualification + grade in each row, see the running total.
How many UCAS points is an A at A-Level?
48 points. A* is 56, A is 48, B is 40, C is 32, D is 24, E is 16.
How many UCAS points is AAB?
136 points. 48 (A) + 48 (A) + 40 (B) = 136.
How many UCAS points is A*A*A*?
168 points. 56 × 3.
How many UCAS points is a Distinction in BTEC?
Depends on the size. BTEC Extended Cert Distinction = 48; BTEC Diploma DD = 96; BTEC Extended Dip DDD = 144.
How do BTECs convert?
BTEC Extended Diploma D*D*D* = 168 (equivalent to A*A*A* at A-Level). DDD = 144 (equivalent to AAA).
Do all universities use UCAS points?
No — most Russell Group and top universities specify grade requirements (AAA, AAB) rather than points totals. Points-based offers are more common at post-1992 institutions and apprenticeship routes.
Does GCSE count for UCAS points?
No — GCSEs do not contribute to the UCAS tariff. Only Level 3 qualifications (A-Level, AS, BTEC L3, IB, Scottish Higher and above, etc.) count.
