CEM vs GL Assessment

Two main 11+ exam providers. CEM was designed to be tutor-proof; GL is multiple-choice and predictable.

GL Assessment (formerly NFER) tests are largely multiple-choice with separate maths, English, verbal and non-verbal reasoning papers. CEM (Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring) blended subjects across two papers and aimed to be harder to coach.

Worked examples
GL: separate papers, multiple-choice, predictable structure.
CEM: blended papers (mixing maths, comprehension, verbal); broader vocabulary tested.
From 2024: Kent and most consortia have moved to GL or bespoke; CEM has wound down.

Frequently asked questions

Is CEM still in use?
Largely no for state grammars from 2024. Independent schools and a few consortia retain CEM-style papers. Always check your specific school's website.
Bespoke regional tests?
Bucks, Essex, Birmingham use bespoke (often GL-licensed) tests. Buying past-paper packs from the school's preferred provider is the most efficient prep.
