2 times table
All even numbers. Year 2 expects fluent recall of 2× up to 12×2 = 24.
The 2 times table is the first table children fully learn (Year 2). It's the same as doubling and the same as counting in 2s — three views of the same fact, all worth pointing out.
Worked examples
1×2=2, 2×2=4, 3×2=6, 4×2=8, 5×2=10.
6×2=12, 7×2=14, 8×2=16, 9×2=18, 10×2=20.
11×2=22, 12×2=24. All answers end in 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8.
Frequently asked questions
Should I rote-learn or understand first?
Both. Show that 4×2 means ‘four twos’ = 2+2+2+2 = 8 (understanding), then drill for instant recall.
Are 4×2 and 2×4 the same?
Yes — multiplication is commutative. Knowing this halves the facts to learn.
What's an ‘array’?
A grid of dots used to show multiplication: 3 rows of 2 dots = 6 dots = 3×2. Year 2 introduces arrays formally.
