Graphs (GCSE)
Linear, quadratic, cubic, reciprocal, exponential, sine/cosine/tan (Higher). Recognise shapes.
Each graph type has a recognisable shape. GCSE expects you to recognise (Foundation) and sketch with key features (Higher): intercepts, asymptotes, max/min, period.
Worked examples
y = x²: U-shape parabola, vertex at origin.
y = 1/x: two-branch hyperbola; asymptotes at axes.
y = 2x: exponential, through (0, 1), grows fast for x > 0.
Frequently asked questions
Sin/cos/tan graphs?
Higher tier. Period 360° for sin/cos; 180° for tan. Range ±1 for sin/cos; tan unbounded.
Cubic shape?
Three roots possible (or fewer). y = x³ passes through origin and (1, 1), (−1, −1).
